Broken Social Scene performs beneath a Heineken Billboard

There’s been a lot of clamor about “selling out” in the new economic landscape of “indie rock” in the past few years. From Neon Indian’s deal with Mountain Dew to the Best Coast/Kid Cudi/Rostam Batmanglij (Vampire Weekend) Converse song to Band of Horses using a Microsoft Zune sponsored tour bus, there’s been plenty of examples of artists looking for new revenue streams. That topic deserves a good several hundred word analysis at least, but as a musician myself, ultimately I think fans don’t quite recognize how tough it is for a band to keep afloat. In a new development in this theme, Broken Social Scene recently played a free show beneath a huge Heineken billboard across from Wrigley Field. You can check one of the official ads out below. Plus there are a few fan shot videos of live songs.
