Hey! Happy Monday! Did you stream the Pitchfork Music Festival this weekend? If so, you probably caught Vampire Weekend’s festival closing, headlining set last night. Unfortunately, I myself missed it. Hopefully there’s a stream somewhere. However, I did get to spend an hour yesterday reading interviews with Ezra Koenig. If you’ve got some free time and dig VW, I would highly recommend doing that. He’s an incredibly bright and insightful dude. A few tidbits from my readings about Ezra:
- Despite the rich, Ivy league connotations with Vampire Weekend, Ezra received big scholarships (including one from his dad’s labor union) to go to Columbia. Plus he’s still been paying off student debt.
- Their band name was inspired by the short film he and a few friends made (of the same name). That film was inspired by The Lost Boys, which he caught on TV.
- Ezra thinks the one needs to balance out being aware of first world advantages/global problems by showing compassion in every small situation.
- Ezra created a serious hip-hop project back in high school.
All that said, enjoy my personal favorite track off Vampire Weekend’s first album. Here’s “Kids Don’t Stand A Chance”. And check out the brand new song Vampire Weekend debuted last week.
