Following an opening performance for fellow Oakland act Trails & Ways, Waterstrider have caught my attention and ears. If you’re unfamiliar with Waterstrider, I recommend checking out single “Constellation” and their hypnotic cover of Little Dragon’s “Twice“. Today, they released their first original new track in a year and a half. This comes at an opportune time for Waterstrider, as they’ve just announced a national tour with Gardens & Villa.
Given the strength of Gardens & Villa’s recent release Dunes and early promise of “Redwood”, you should swing by one of these dates (below) as they pass through. The jittery tightness and polyrhythmic precision of “Redwood” reminds me of a more organic take on King of Limbs. Nate Salman’s vocals bear some Yorke-resemblance as well, with nimble leaps to falsetto and punctual phrasing. Having spoken with Nate about his respect for Sigur Ros’ Jonsi’s vocals, it’s excellent to see him hone in. Stay tuned for Waterstrider’s contribution to an upcoming compilation album from Bay Area collective Non-Market.
