With the new release of Era Extraña, Neon Indian is in the spotlight once again. Hailing from Denton in Texas, Alan Palomo from Mexico composes their music. He is also well-known throughout the music world for the work he has done with the band Ghosthunter and also as the artist Vega.
‘Psychic Chasms’ was the début album of Neon Indian, which met with a very positive reception upon its release. Fans would listen to it anywhere, at a party, driving in the car or playing Party Poker with friends. Pitchfork Media even named this album as Best New Music and the 14th best album of the year 2009. Two tracks from ‘Psychic Chasms’ are also listed on Pitchfork Media’s list of The Top 100 Tracks of 2009. The track ‘Deadbeat Summer’ came in at number 13, with ‘Should Have Taken Acid With You’ coming in at number 74.
The album was praised by Spin Magazine for its synth tones and dreamy samples. According to Palomo, he takes a lot of his musical influence from his father. Briefly during the late 70s and early 80s, his father made a living as a Mexican popstar and there are some samples of his material in the work that Palomo has done with Neon Indian.
Neon Indian’s next album entitled Era Extraña was released on September 13th, 2011. The tracks were written by Palomo in Helsinki, Finland where he travelled to during this time. The tracks are joined by three instrumentals that are relatively brief. They are entitled ‘Heart:Attack’, ‘Heart:Decay’ and ‘Heart:Release’. The Scandinavian winter, however, does not appear to have had a negative effect upon the creations in this album.
While performing, a live band join Palomo on the stage. This consists of drummer Jason Faries, Leanne Macomber on keyboard and vocals and the live visuals of Lars Larson.
