Morning Teleportation of Bowling Green, KY

Young Kentucky band Morning Teleportation have received their fair share of buzz as of late, partially via their connection to Modest Mouse’s Isaac Brock and his new record label Glacial Pace. However, a quick listen to the fivesome demonstrates just why Brock was eager to get them on board in the first place. The gang’s psychedelic, sprawling tunes pull in electric styles from roaming jazz to dancey electronica to good ole’ rock. Relentless touring have brought Morning Teleportation well-earned respect as they release their first LP, Expanding Anyway. In the midst of touring to support the new record, they shared a few thoughts.

Apes on Tape: You have a ranging number of styles and instruments in your music, which is very refreshing to hear. How did you guys reach a mutual, cohesive vision? Is it a constantly changing thing or do you try to keep a certain musical goal in mind during the creative process?

Morning Teleportation: If we’re all having a good day and we’re in the same room together it just works out.
The creative process is constantly changing, we take a different approach for each song.

AOT: Most music fans would die for a chance to work with and be produced by Isaac Brock. How did that ever come about?

MT: Hung out in Nashville till 6 in the morning screaming rawhide and causing ruckus. He saw us play in Cincinnati and said he would produce the record.

AOT: How is it working with him and what sort of relationship do you guys have?

MT: It was fun being in the studio with isaac. Our relationship is one of extraordinary dude-i-tude.

AOT: Was your relocation from the Midwest to Portland because of the Glacial Pace deal, or were there other reasons behind that too?

MT: Paul had lived in Portland for a year before and wanted to move back. The offer to record the album gave us another good reason to relocate.

AOT: A lot of people, myself included, are pretty excited to hear the new LP Expanding Anyway. How long was the recording process and how did that fit in with touring?

MT: The recording process was 12 days straight and two days in isaac’s home studio for acoustic tracks.

AOT: The band has done a lot of touring before you guys really have released any recordings. Was that just the way the schedule worked out, or did you want to hone your live skills first?

MT: We always dreamed of living on the road and when we found ourselves able to do so, we took off.

AOT: During that touring, you got to play with Cage the Elephant. How did was that arranged? And how was that experience?

MT: Touring with Cage the Elephant is always like a family vacation. They are childhood best friends from Kentucky. We’re always crashing each other’s stages and pulling pranks.

AOT: The video for ‘Expanding Anyway” is visually incredible and very unique too. Could you tell us more on who made that and what went into it?

MT: The video was made by very good friends Tripp and Jenna Watt, also known as Phantasmic. They put a lot of work into the project, lots of stop motion. They have a making of video on youtube too:

AOT: After the record comes out on March 8th, you’ve got a huge tour coming up. Are you expecting anything different for this tour? Prepared
yourselves differently?

MT: We’re excited to play more intimate shows and we’ve packed more fun musical gadgets.
