tartufi band
Following this week’s previous Apes on Tape 100K Party preview pieces on Seattle’s Kithkin and Spokane’s Exploring the Depths, we’ll shine some light on San Francisco’s Tartufi. The San Francisco duo will play a 45 minute set just before hometown act Aan this Saturday. Tartufi–not to be confused with the Google-real-estate-sharing Italian truffle “tartufo”–is composed of Lynne Angel and Brian Gorman. While originally a trio after their 2001 beginnings, the two shifted directions and now are solely responsible for Tartufi.

While this is no revelation regarding Tartufi, it’s simply amazing how much sound and how many intricate layers Angel and Gorman create between the two of them. Saturday will be my first time seeing them live, but I’m told they replicate their records’ density and nuances very well live. While not sonically so related, Tartfui’s layering reminds me of the way El Ten Eleven crafts layer upon layer into their two-person tracks. Moreover, Tartufi’s definitely forged a sound of their own. Their 2009 LP Nest of Waves and Wires is embedded below. You can also check out 2005’s So We Are Alive and 2006’s Us Upon Buildings Upon Us.

The Apes on Tape 100K Party takes place Saturday Sept 1 at Kelly’s Olympian in downtown Portland, Oregon
