Tonight’s the night, y’all. In t-minus seven hours, we’ll hit Kelly’s Olympian in downtown Portland, Oregon for the Apes on Tape 100K Party. We’ve run previews on Seattle’s Kithkin, Spokane’s Exploring the Depths and San Francisco’s Tartufi. Tonight’s headliner is hometown gem, aan. While aan plays around town their fair share, this will be their first show at Kelly’s Olympian.
In an aan press release/bio I stumbled upon, the writer made mention of comparisons between aan, Dirty Projectors, and Animal Collective. That seemed like a bit of a buzz-grabbin’ way to kick off a press release, and I don’t necessarily find the picks super accurate. Perhaps in the potential for aan’s high quality tunes. The looping style of AnCo’s vocals does apply, though Bud Wilson’s vox are their own unique deal. Moreover, I find aan’s tracks just plain groovier, more linear and less fragmented. Simply put, you’re more likely to bust-a-move with aan, yet their complex songwriting still has the ability to soundtrack exploration of your own headspace in your solo time.
Aan are crafting their own sound and creating something I imagine will be quite captivating in the life setting; high replay value but still immediately accessible. Check out the video for “I Don’t Need Love” and cruise through their available songs on iTunes.
