As San Francisco’s Noise Pop festival entered its 22nd year, New Parish hosted–to my knowledge–the very first Oakland Noise Pop show. San Francisco’s Social Studies and Portland’s aan added another notch to their Noise Pop belts while Farallons and Max & the Moon opened.
In January, aan dropped their debut Amor Ad Nauseum LP via Party Damage Records. The album realizes several years of work for the band, spanning a handful of solid EP’s and singles. Their tour efforts, including a stint with Smashing Pumpkins, have honed their chops as they’ve audibly grown much since they joined us for our 100K party 18 months ago. Bud Wilson’s vocals, perhaps recognized early on as charmingly wild on “I Don’t Need Love“, have expanded to cover a greater range and sounded excellent in New Parish. Aan subbed in Brainstorm guitarist Patrick Phillips without much trouble, as Patrick handled guitar and helped recreate some of the studio intricacies. Their current tour dates are below.
Social Studies had a busy 2012 & 2013 following the release of their stellar Developer album and the ensuing tour dates. They had taken some time off to focus on recording new material. There’s no official release date or announcement on that album yet, but apparently it’s very close to being finished. As Bay staples, this was actually Social Studies’ first show at New Parish. Their set included a number of Developer tracks, which I’ve personally come to dig a lot (check out “Terracur” if you have time for one). They also debuted quite a few new songs that sounded great. Seems as though the new stuff moves away from Developer’s more sparse and minimal arrangements. These tracks are still tight and sharp, but they’ve brought in more layers that really filled up New Parish. Social Studies sounded bigger, bolder and more confident behind Natalia’s strong vocals. We’ll post news on the new album once it’s out, stay tuned.
