outside lands 2013

Catching the earlier sets at any festival can be a quest, especially as ay three of four rolls around. And especially if you’re not near Golden Gate Park and might rely on the ever-slow MUNI system, getting to Outside Lands early might be tricky. But if you can brave your hangover, roll out of bed sooner and catch the following acts, you’ll be in for a treat. Have a listen and see if you can’t snag at least a few tracks from their live performances at Outside Lands 2013 this weekend.

  • Social Studies: We’ve covered San Francisco’s own Social Studies numerous times here on the site before. But this weekend will offer the chance to see the band in a sort of coming out party that’ll be even more next level than their Noise Pop 2013 performance.

  • King Tuff: The Burger Records /SubPop dude rocks in the surf, psyche garage vein of Thee of Sees and Ty Segall. I heard he tore up Pickathon Festival last weekend. I’m hoping he shakes off some of the fog for a rousing set this weekend.

  • Ms Mr: If you’re a regular listener of Sirius XMU or Alt Nation or follow the blogosphere closely, you’ve probably heard Ms Mr’s “Hurricane” before. It’s an incredibly catchy track. But Ms Mr’s Outside Lands set will offer a chance to get to know the rest of the band’s catalogue.

  • Deep Vally: This LA duo apparently met during crochet class, but you would not suspect that listening to some of their rock jams. Their vocals share a hint of Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ Karen O, which might be a good warmup for the latter’s headlining set later on.

  • Wild Feathers: If you’re looking for something less electronic and more folk/country but still uptempo, Wild Feathers might be you’re cup of tea. The Nashville group offers a brand of Americana tinged rock that I’d liken to Seattle’s Cave Singers.

  • Gene Farris: Not that anyone has ever smoked any weed in Golden Gate Park, but Gene Farris’ downtempo, chill electronic DJ set might make for the perfect opportunity to do so this weekend. Try out “Smoke Session Pause” for a taste of the Chicago musician’s style.

  • Naia Kete: Naia’s laid back grooves and socially conscious lyrics should fit right at home in Golden Gate Park.

  • Soft White Sixties: Another home grown SF band, Soft White Sixties garnered a fair share of attention this spring, including some SXSW buzz. I’ll be curious to see how raucous their Outside Lands set gets.

  • Mother Hips: Following the Bay-based theme, Mother Hips adds more local music to Outside Lands and this list. Mother Hips have been around as long as a number of this weekend’s festival patrons. Which means it’s safe to say they know what they’re doin out there.

  • Dub Gabriel: While the Outside Lands lineup is fairly varied, it’s not too heavy on reggae and dub. But if you’re looking for the latter, look no further than Dub Gabriel.
