Are you down with #seapunk? If you were watching SNL this weekend and happened to catch Rihanna’s performance of “Diamonds”, you might’ve wondered what the hell the deal was with the visual aesthetic. Basically, Rihanna ripped off an internet subgenre of music called “Seapunk”. What is “seapunk” you ask? Good question. Check out the Wiki article, but basically its an online-only subgenre featuring plenty of dated 90’s over-the-top computer graphic imagery. The big draw here is that pop queen Rihanna saw it as a big enough trend to rip it off and use it in a mainstream media context. Do the seapunks revolt? Do they give it up now that it’s mainstream?
