Long known for its historical influences on grunge and indie rock, legendary Pacific Northwest label Sub Pop has diverted from both of those traditions with the signing of its newest members, Shabazz Palaces. The avant-grade, left field hip-hop group hails from the Central District of Sub Pop’s hometown–Seattle, WA. After releasing two EP’s in 2009 (Of Light and Shabazz Palaces), Palaces gained quite the following the in Emerald City, including Sub Pop. Fronted by Ishmael “Butterfly” Butler aka Palaceer Lazaro, Shabazz Palaces won a Genius Award this year, which are given out by Seattle alt-weekly The Stranger.
