Can’s Tago Mago album turns 40 years old today

Forty years ago to the day, German krautrock band Can released their third studio album, Tago Mago. This 1971 double album was a mind-blowing, genre-bending, roller coaster ride of wandering psychedelia and unbelievably tight grooves that would rewrite the rules of both the krautrock scene it emerged from and all shapes and forms of future rock and roll. Personally, after the first time I heard this puppy, it went in my car stereo and didn’t leave for five weeks. Fans of bands like Radiohead, Animal Collective, Portishead, Ariel Pink, and Sonic Youth more will surely dig this album. For those who follow us on Twitter or Facebook, you might’ve seen our recent posting of the BBC documentary on Krautrock. If you haven’t seen it, check it out right here.

With the fortieth anniversary, Spoon Records and Mute Records are releasing a Deluxe Edition featuring the original 1971 artwork and 50 minutes of unreleased live material from 1972. Check out original Tago Mago song “Bring Me Coffee or Tea” remastered plus a new live version of “Mushroom” below.
