kendrick lamar "i"

Kendrick Lamar announced he’s working on a follow-up to his 2012 instant-classic good kid, m.A.A.d. city album a while back. The new album does not have an official title nor an official release date yet. And Kendrick’s got no guarantee the album will be out in 2014. Apparently. he’s been holing up in the studio pulling long hours. Dr. Dre will be heavily featured in the production of the album, but Kendrick said that, currently, there are no other rappers on the album.

Anyhow, today the first single dropped. You can stream Kendrick Lamar “i” below. It’s a fast paced track with some Santana-esque guitar work with Kendrick rapping about self-love and keepin’ on amidst whatever’s around. But, thankfully, the track’s not nearly as cheesy as that sentence sounds. The opening quote sets the theme:

We got a young brother that stands for something! We got a young brother that believes in the all of us! Brother Kendrick Lamar! He’s not a rapper, he’s a writer, he’s an author! And if you read between the lines, we’ll learn how to love one another! But you can’t do that… I said, you can’t do that without loving yourself first.

Update: Also check out a six minute freestyle that Kendrick did for LA’s Big Boys Neighborhood below.
