lou reed

It seems a bit of a misnomer to call this post “Happy Monday” given the content. Yet while the passing of music legend Lou Reed brings much sadness, it also offers us a chance to reflect on the life and musical contributions of one of the second half of the 20th century’s most influential artists. Lou Reed (of Velvet Underground fame) gave us so many gems, it’s hard to decide where to start. Try to find one band on this site that hasn’t appreciated Velvet Underground in their musical growth. Personally, Lou and the Underground’s “Pale Blue Eyes”, originally from Velvet Underground’s 1969 self-titled effort, still always gets me. Below are both a 1998 version that Lou performed, after VU had gone their separate ways, and another version from 2007 performed with the Who’s Pete Townshend. May you find some inspiration from other Reed & VU tracks today.

Rest in peace and thank you, Lou Reed.
