bells atlas "future bones"

After a residency at Zoo Labs and much hard work, Oakland’s Bells Atlas are preparing to release their Hyperlust EP this spring. Composed of Sandra Lawson-Ndu, Derek Barber, Geneva Harrison and Doug Stuart, Bells Atlas released Hyperlust‘s first single “Future Bones” this week. In the veins of Dirty Projectors, tUnE-yArDs, Deerhoof and Ava Luna, Bells Atlas craft complex arrangements, intricate layering and polyrhythmic builds that still arrive as a beautiful total whole. Moreover, if said bands leave you feeling too cerebral, Bells Atlas’ silk rhythms and gratifying grooves may strike the perfect balance. Read a description  of “Future Bones” from the band itself:

The song marries comfort and familiarity with surprise and adventure- two themes not only present in its storytelling nature, but also in the musical composition. The song is anchored by a perpetual beat that sits against a variety of sonic landscapes and floats with the depth and flow of a fantastical poem. “Future Bones” is the essence of Bells Atlas’ explorative spirit.

You can pre-order Hyperlust here. For Bay Area folks, they play Oakland’s New Parish on May 8.

“Future Bones” Lyrics

If future takes me to find our bones
i’ll mold them together
and desert this form
Break (break) original rules that would guide the way we’d move until
we required cover
and strange spirits remained

I can center on such things to build (to build, to build) higher good
And I can center ways to build (to build)
from set stains in the dirt
but tied to the past
Who saw it destruct
(ooh) but never could stop
to ease it…?

Breaking down our form so patiently
And I have a design for this
If what is left is an energy
then what is gone?

Not creating walls, life gathers at our backs
Like many others we would come undone where we were loose

I become an island
I do become an island
I watch life from afar before they find me
I become an ocean
I do become an ocean
I carry carry much deeper than I see

Now I adore you
I do adore you
finally
I adore you
Finally I do adore you

Breaking down our form so patiently
And I have a design for this.
If what is left is an energy
then what is gone?

Not creating walls, life gathers at our backs
Like many others we would come undone where we were loose
